NEXTDC’s A1 Adelaide Data Centre is South Australia’s first Tier IV-certified data facility and a benchmark for resilience, sustainability, and smart design. Located in the heart of the city, one of the centre’s most prominent architectural features is its innovative facade— a carefully crafted piece of media architecture.
Solution—
Designed in collaboration with Arup, the facade comprises vertical fins with integrated digital linear LED lighting, creating a responsive media surface that transforms the building into a living, animated presence within the Adelaide skyline. Driven by generative media content, the lighting is ever evolving and also responds to programmed themes and significant community events, such as Anzac Day and Adelaide Fringe Festival, ensuring the centre remains contextually relevant and visually engaging.
From a controls perspective, the lighting communicates on a DMX512 data backbone enabling precise, real-time control of nearly 15,000 individually addressable RGBW pixels within the facade. Light-Ctrl was engaged to deliver the feature facade including systems integration, content programming and commissioning, bringing the installation to life through tailored animations and colours.
This project exemplifies excellence in integrated electrical and lighting systems, combining architectural vision with advanced digital lighting and controls to create a standout piece of media architecture in the public realm.
